VILLAGE BLK

A Display Typeface by Studio West of Death

First issued in the year 2021 and revised in 2025, Village BLK is a modernist sans-serif display face, rendered by hand at the studios of West of Death. Conceived as an homage to the typographic clarity of mid-century visual systems, the face draws influence from technical lettering specimens and industrial signage prevalent in early-to-mid 20th century design. The character of Village BLK is defined by its bold geometries and reduced forms—disciplined yet expressive. The Regular cut carries the solemn weight of a street name etched into municipal stone, while the newly introduced Outline variant offers a skeletal echo—structural, architectural, almost spectral in its presence. Although thoroughly modern in application, Village BLK recalls a time when letters were labor, when forms were constructed not by code but by hand, each curve considered, each terminal calibrated with precision.

The typeface takes its name from “The Village,” a track on Power, Corruption & Lies by New Order—an oblique reference to post-industrial melancholy and the spectral residue of utopian design. As such, Village BLK is both artifact and assertion: a typographic solution for posters, headlines, and identity systems requiring severity tempered with soul.

Available in two styles—Regular and Outline—Village BLK is suitable for use across digital and print media,

where bold clarity and historical resonance are desired.
