ET UN OCÉAN
A Display Typeface by Studio West of Death
Issued originally in 2021 and revised in 2025 to include an Outline variant, Et Un Océan is a hand-rendered display typeface, inspired by the fleeting frames and ideological cool of the French New Wave. Developed in homage to the title card sequence of Jean-Luc Godard’s Masculin Féminin (1966), the typeface is a typographic reverie—a meeting point of literature, cinema, and the protest of form. Each glyph has been drawn and painted by hand—line by line, shape by shape—resisting automation in favor of slowness, craft, and a studied imperfection. The Regular cut feels urgent, like stenciled slogans on a student barricade. The Outline variant, introduced in 2025, offers a skeletal transparency—a whisper where once there was a shout.
Et Un Océan belongs to that peculiar lineage of European modernism that is both formal and fractured. It carries with it the spirit of a cinema that questioned reality, interrupted narrative, and spoke in intertitles and ellipses. Letters here are not neutral vessels—they are actors on a stage, delivering lines with élan and ideological weight. Designed for posters, title sequences, editorial spreads, and brand identities that require mood, memory, and manifesto, Et Un Océan allows designers to bring a touch of Nouvelle Vague poetry to contemporary forms. It does not shout—but it lingers.
Available in Regular and Outline, it stands ready to serve any visual project
where the aesthetic of thought is paramount.
